The University of North Texas ( UNT ) announces a nationwide search to recruit a new Dean for its College of Public Affairs and Community Service.

Founded in Denton , Texas in 1890, the University of North Texas is today the 4 th largest public university in Texas and one of the fastest growing higher education institutions in the country. Located 35 miles north of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, UNT plays an important educational, research and service role in the North Texas region.

The College of Public Affairs and Community Service is composed of eight academic departments and several centers and institutes with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. Degree programs are designed to integrate theory and practice and include a strong emphasis on student participation locally, nationally and internationally. The college offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Arts, Master of Public Administration, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Programs, some nationally ranked, are offered in gerontology, anthropology, applied economics, behavior analysis, criminal justice, emergency administration and planning, public administration, rehabilitation, social work and sociology. The college also sponsors programs and research to enhance quality of life and address social concerns.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic visionary with the ability to achieve unity among diverse academic units within a growing vibrant environment. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean has opportunities to further engage the region's public service community organizations. The Dean is responsible for academic, fiscal, and personnel matters; providing leadership for the faculty, staff, and students in the College; and fostering excellence in teaching, research, scholarly activities, and service. The Dean represents the College to external constituencies and actively participates in fund-raising initiatives. The Dean is the major advocate for the College within the University and beyond.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Experienced in fund-raising and grantsmanship
  • Terminal degree
  • Proven record of success in advancing academic and/or community services; locally, nationally and internationally
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills  

Desired Qualifications include:  

  • Background in strategic planning and implementation of plan
  • Ability to foster departmental efforts to create a student centered learning environment
  • Openness to entrepreneurial approaches and ventures
  • Experience in representing academic programs to internal and external communities
  • Ability to create team efforts
  • Ability to foster strong community engagement and service learning
  • Experience with various instructional delivery systems, including web based instruction
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity
