Course Description:

COMS3300 - This course is designed to introduce students to an overview of philanthropy and the financial planning and fundraising practices in non-profit organizations. Students will learn to assess the financial health of organizations, understand the duty of fiscal responsibility, and develop and implement fundraising strategies. This course is taught totally online through WebCT. All materials, lectures, quizzes, projects, programs and discussions are conducted online over the course of the semester. In addition to the course work, you are required to complete 20 hours of volunteer work in a fundraising department at a not-for-profit agency.

Course Objectives:

A student who has successfully completed the course should be able to:

To describe philanthropy and its importance.

To describe the current trends and issues affecting philanthropy and fundraising.

To articulate the importance of stewardship to the individual, the charity, and the community.

To identify the major types of fundraising campaigns and events that organizations plan and conduct.

To describe the human resources involved in fundraising.

To determine an overall fundraising plan.

To determine how accountability can be measured.

To identify the major financial reporting documents required.
